Cicero Translations offers various interpreting services.

Simultaneous interpreting
Simultaneous interpreting is normally used in situations where there are large numbers of people and more than two languages are spoken, such as at a conference. The interpreters sit in soundproof booths and interpret at the same time as the main speaker is speaking. They talk directly into a microphone and the delegates wear headsets to hear the translation. This type of interpreting requires extremely high levels of concentration so the interpreters work in pairs, each doing sessions of around 45 minutes. Cicero can provide the interpreters and all the technical equipment needed for this type of assignment.

Consecutive interpreting
Consecutive interpreting is used when there are only two languages involved and is ideal for smaller meetings, seminars, court appearances, factory tours etc. Each time the speaker finishes a sentence or paragraph they pause so that the interpreter can orally translate what they have just said.

It should be remembered that this type of interpreting will make the meeting much longer as everything needs to be said twice. This can severely affect linguistic flow and spontaneity so consecutive interpreting is not recommended for occasions where a lot of creative input is required.

Technical equipment is not usually needed for consecutive interpreting. In some cases a 'tour guide system' may be necessary for multiple delegates e.g. on tours, exhibition visits etc. Again, Cicero can provide the necessary equipment.

Consecutive interpreting works best if the people at the meeting have had a little guidance on how to speak when using an interpreter. Please ask for our advice sheet on this.

Liaison interpreting
Liaison interpreting is a more relaxed, informal and flexible form of consecutive interpreting that is particularly useful for groups of less than four people. It is ideal for meetings between two people, one-on-one interviews or when the interpreter is accompanying an executive on a foreign visit.

For any interpreting assignment, it is very helpful to provide the interpreters with copies of relevant documents, presentations, reference material etc. several days before the meeting so that they can prepare in good time.
